Summary:
Position Summary
• The Biomedical Engineering Technician (BMET) is responsible for the inspection, installation, preventive maintenance, repair, calibration, testing, and lifecycle support of medical equipment used throughout Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. The position ensures that clinical equipment operates safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and manufacturer requirements.
• In addition to traditional biomedical engineering responsibilities, this position supports network-connected medical devices, medical device integration, cybersecurity initiatives, clinical technology implementations, and collaboration between Healthcare Technology Management (HTM), Information Technology (IT), Clinical Operations, and vendors to ensure safe and efficient delivery of patient care.
• The Biomedical Engineering Technician contributes to equipment lifecycle management, technology standardization, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.

The starting annual salary for this position is $74,193 and this can include a full comprehensive benefits package.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Medical Equipment Support
• Performs inspection, preventive maintenance, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and decommissioning of biomedical and clinical equipment.
• Performs electrical safety testing and operational verification using approved biomedical test equipment.
• Ensures equipment complies with manufacturer specifications and regulatory standards.
• Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and performance verification testing.
• Conducts safety inspections and functional testing.
• Documents all preventive maintenance activities within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Assists in developing maintenance procedures and inspection protocols. Responds promptly to clinical equipment service requests.
• Provides technical support to physicians, nurses, researchers, laboratory personnel, and other hospital departments.
• Maintains professional relationships with clinical staff, vendors, and contractors.
• Provides basic user education on equipment operation when appropriate
• Ensures compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, FDA, AAMI, NFPA, ECRI, and organizational standards.
• Participates in internal and external education.
• Maintains technical competency on emerging medical technologies.
• Cross-trains with other HTM personnel.
• Shares technical knowledge with colleagues.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Medical Device Integration & Clinical Technology
• Supports implementation and maintenance of network-connected medical devices.
• Assists with medical device integration into enterprise clinical systems.
• Supports interoperability between medical devices and hospital information systems.
• Collaborates with Information Technology on device communication, connectivity, and interoperability issues.
• Supports implementation of new clinical technologies and digital health initiatives.
• Participates in deployment, configuration, testing, and validation of connected medical equipment.
• Assists in maintaining cybersecurity compliance for network-connected medical devices.
• Supports software upgrades, firmware updates, operating system patches, and vulnerability remediation activities.
• Assists in maintaining medical device inventory related to cybersecurity and asset management initiatives.
Information Technology Collaboration
• Serves as an effective liaison between Healthcare Technology Management and Information Technology teams.
• Collaborates with IT on network troubleshooting involving medical devices.
• Supports wired and wireless connectivity for clinical equipment.
• Assists with Active Directory integration, device authentication, IP addressing, and network communication where applicable.
• Coordinates troubleshooting activities involving servers, middleware, virtual environments, and clinical applications supporting medical devices.
• Responds promptly to clinical equipment service requests.
• Provides technical support to physicians, nurses, researchers, laboratory personnel, and other hospital departments.
• Maintains professional relationships with clinical staff, vendors, and contractors.
• Provides basic user education on equipment operation when appropriate

Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience

1. Associate's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics or a related field and the equivalent of two (2) years of internship or on-the-job training/work experience in the troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of biomedical, electronic, or electro/mechanical equipment; or
2. High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma and the equivalent of four (4) years of internship or on-the-job training/work experience in the troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of biomedical, electronic, or electro/mechanical equipment.

NOTE:
Required degrees must have been granted by an accredited college or university or one recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as following acceptable educational practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Preferred Associate Engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Information Technology, or a related field with four (2) years of relevant biomedical/clinical experience and OEM specialty training; OR.
  • High School Diploma with six (4) years of relevant biomedical/clinical experience and OEM specialty training.
